Manual Therapy

Manual therapy treatments are highly effective in helping reduce pain and restore the body’s natural mechanics. Our physical therapists use a variety of techniques including massage, joint mobilization and manipulation, IASTM (instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization), kinesiotaping, and cupping to help restore your body.

Manual therapy treatments can often provide immediate results of increased range of motion and reduced pain. Your physical therapist with Flowstate Physiotherapy may use one or multiple of the manual techniques listed above to decrease pain, improve blood flow, reduce guarding, and desensitize the nervous system. The result is usually an increased range of motion and mobility.

Research has shown that manual therapy techniques are always best paired with therapeutic exercise to facilitate neuromuscular re-education so that you can actively achieve a full range of motion and restore optimal movement patterns. This helps maintain the short-term results from manual techniques for long-term changes and success. Your physical therapist will determine the correct exercises for you to do to ensure maixmal results.

Manual therapy can also play a large role in recovery to help decrease inflammation and reduce muscle soreness after hard efforts. At Flowstate Physiotherapy, we use manual therapy during Rapid Recovery Sessions to help you feel your best and optimize recovery during training and after big races.

I am so glad to have come across Nyssa’s practice. I started my running journey last year and have faced many challenges. With Nyssa’s assessment of my specific case, I’ve been able to slowly recover. Even though I had a lot of obstacles in addition to my knee pain, such as dealing with a pulled muscle and then getting Covid, the targeted exercises and advice have helped become stronger and sustain my running goals. I’ve been able to run longer and healthier than ever. I absolutely recommend working with Nyssa!

Nyssa is a terrific PT - she not only helped me heal, get stronger, and return to running after a knee injury, she was able to diagnose and correct the underlying reasons for the pain. She helped me completely overhaul and retrain my form (not a small task, because I was doing almost everything in a way that made injury inevitable!); my running improved so much from working with her, leading to new PRs and increased distances. She is warm and empathetic, and really goes above and beyond, even coming out on a cold rainy morning to cheer me on at my first race post-injury. I enthusiastically recommend her to everyone, especially runners!

I loved working with Nyssa! She is a PT who deeply understands runners’ pain— both physical and mental. She gave me amazing strength exercises and form cues to help me improve my runs, as well as just general advice on how to approach the rest of my training block and keep a positive mindset. Her running gait analysis was incredibly insightful and I feel like she helped me understand the little pains and aches I had been dealing with for years in the context of my running form— this was crucial to helping me self-correct (or at least get on the journey of self-correcting) some of these issues. Nyssa is super professional and again, I can’t stress enough how great it was to be able to get PT from a fellow runner who really gets it! I also just loved talking to her! HIGHLY recommend starting out with at least a gait analysis from Nyssa, and I promise you’ll want to continue.

I would absolutely recommend Nyssa to any runner, whether you're recovering from an injury or just looking to improve your game!! I am training for my first marathon and have been experiencing Achilles issues for a couple months. Nyssa gave me a comprehensive exam and gait analysis, suggested some tweaks to my form as well as some exercises to work into my daily routine, and I was noticing tangible improvements in my runs and pain levels within a week. So happy that I stumbled across an ad for Flowstate Physiotherapy -- I feel like I can confidently train for my marathon thanks to Nyssa!

Nyssa was a huge help to me when I developed disc injury. Having her come to my home was incredibly helpful and easy. She is professional, friendly, always arrived on time, and followed up via email with easy-to-follow PT exercises to continue at home. Before I started working with her, I could barely walk due to excruciating nerve pain, and within a few visits I had a huge improvement! I am so glad I found her. Highly recommended.

I had a great experience with Flowstate. I've suffered from plantar fasciitis from running for nearly a year, and tried many things that didn't work. Dr. Midden diagnosed the underlying issue, and worked with me one-on-one to make sure I built the strength to get better. I'm happy to be pain-free, which didn't seem possible before.
